Honey, I Shrunk The Carbs!

One of my friend’s sister went to a slimming center days before her wedding.  They promised great results and an ideal weight loss for her with crash diet including supplements and protein powders instead of natural food. When I met her at the bridal shower two days before the wedding ceremony, she looked shrunk, totally. The girl I knew, all of 80kgs was looking ill and haggard, flustered at what happened to her. She had relied on them for a makeover to look like a princess on her most special day, and the result was horrendous. I don’t know if she had mentioned this crash diet plan to her would-be husband, but since then I’ve been wary of crash diets and their promises.

It’s true that weight loss has been the agenda of most youth in India with increasing obesity and related diseases due to our sedentary lifestyle. Long hours of desk work and junk food have been culprits in turning us into a nation full of obese and weight-obsessed people. To eat or not to eat – is the question now. What to eat and what not to – comes next. Struggling with the issue of obesity, I’ve tried many regimes of diet including natural food, fruits and at times, honey. Yes. Even I was surprised to know that honey is healthy. We associate everything sweet with unhealthy and unfriendly. But Dabur honey is a lot healthier than sugar and has properties that will astonish you to no end.

1. It has more calories when compared to sugar, but honey can be used in much less quantities as it is sweeter in taste than table sugar. Hence, using half a teaspoonfull of honey can serve our purpose instead of using sugar.

2. Honey has a healthier Glycemic Index than sugar, which implies that the effect of honey in increasing blood glucose is less than table sugar. Honey also has natural enzymes that break blood sugar into glucose and sucrose, thus using less enzymes from our body, helping absorption and easier digestion.

3. Sugar doesn’t have minerals and vitamins, hence it uses our body’s nutrients, slowing down metabolism of undesirable cholesterol, which accumulate them into the body. Honey has its own share of natural vitamins, minerals and other important nutrients which help in metabolism.

Now when we have known how honey can benefit us, it is easier and wiser to include honey diet in our daily routine and glide towards a healthy and sweeter life. About 15-20 years ago, there was a slogan which did its rounds in the weight loss market – “Lose weight now, Tell me how!” Dabur honey actually tells us how to implore a healthy diet and lose substantiable amount of weight. The beautiful Dabur honey website allows you to punch in your height, weight and BMI to calculate the healthy calories you need in order to follow a diet chart. I did mine and it ended up like below.

A few drops of honey in your daily beverage, breakfast of toast or porridge and fruit salads can help you curb sugar craving and also maintain your necessary calorie and carbohydrate intake. For instance, I’ve been following the regime of a spoonful of honey in warm water early in the morning. If nothing else, it makes you feel fresh and rejuvenating before beginning a hectic day.

If a little honey can add some sunshine in your life with its golden flames, don’t crystalise it with the snowish white chillness of sugar.
